Early Childhood Risk Chapter

The Early Childhood Risk Chapter highlights the importance of early detection and management of developmental risks in early childhood education. Undetected delays in learning, speech, motor skills, and vision, such as myopia, can impact a child's academic and social development.

This chapter, the first of its kind in RIMAS, focuses on the risks of delayed detection and the long-term consequences, including academic struggles and vision-related complications like retinal pathologies in adulthood.

Through workshops and seminars, the chapter promotes early screening and intervention strategies to help educators, healthcare professionals, and parents mitigate these risks. By ensuring timely support, we can enhance learning outcomes and create better opportunities for children's future success.

Mr.

Andy Teo is a Developmental Optometrist and Educator specializing in Learning Difficulties and Vision Therapy. With a Master of Science in Clinical Optometry from Salus University, Pennsylvania College of Optometry (US), a Postgraduate Certificate in Behavioural Optometry from the University of New South Wales (AUS), and a Diploma in Learning Disorders Management and Child Psychology from The College of Teachers (UK), he brings a wealth of expertise in both vision care and child development. He is also a Fellow of the Optometric Vision Development & Rehabilitation Association (FOVDRA) and regularly collaborates with doctors, psychologists, occupational therapists, and educators to support children with visual processing challenges related to learning.

Andy's passion for helping children stems from his own personal journey. Having undergone cataract surgery at age 8, he developed amblyopia (lazy eye), double vision, and an intermittent squint, which impacted his learning. His firsthand experience fuels his commitment to ensuring that children struggling with vision-related difficulties receive the right support.

At NeuroTree, a child development practice, Andy works with children facing Dyslexia, ADHD, Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD), and other challenges, helping them improve visual skills essential for learning. He also provides vision therapy for amblyopia, eye turns (squints), and vision rehabilitation for children recovering from low vision, neurological conditions, or traumatic brain injuries.

Beyond clinical work, Andy is passionate about early childhood education. Since 2009, he has been running Early Learning’s Fun Preschool (ELF Preschool), where he develops play-based, science-driven programs to nurture children's cognitive, motor, and visual skills from a young age.
